iAnimate Student Spotlight: 3D Animator Filip Gugoski

Discover Filip Gugoski’s journey from VFX to game animation, his creative process, and how iAnimate helped him level up his skills and career.

“iAnimate has taught me to look at animation in a different way than what I am used to.”

Filip Gugoski — From VFX to Game Animation Mastery

Meet Filip Gugoski, a passionate 3D character animator from Belgrade, Serbia, whose journey into animation began with a deep love for video games and storytelling. Since entering the industry in 2017, Filip has built a strong foundation working in the VFX film space before transitioning into freelance work with a growing focus on game animation.

Despite years of professional experience, Filip reached a point many artists encounter—feeling stuck. Being largely self-taught, he knew there was a gap in his skills but lacked the structure and mentorship to push to the next level. That realization led him to seek out formal animation training, ultimately choosing iAnimate to refine his craft and gain industry-level insight.

Before joining iAnimate, Filip trained at Crater VFX Training Center, one of Serbia’s top studios, where he worked as a 3D animator for three years. His early involvement in the animation community also includes volunteering as a 3D artist at GamesCon Belgrade 2017. Technically versatile, he primarily works in Autodesk Maya but can adapt to tools like Blender, and he enhances his work through editing in Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects.

In a twist of timing, just as Filip committed to leveling up his skills with iAnimate, he landed a role at Replai, joining their animation division—marking a new chapter in his career where preparation met opportunity.

Filip’s story is a powerful example of how continuous learning and the right guidance can unlock new momentum, even for experienced artists.

“Being self-taught wasn't helping anymore…Hence, why I decided to seek professional help with an animation course and choose iAnimate.”

Crafting Motion: Filip’s Animation Process

Filip’s creative process is both structured and highly adaptive, blending strong fundamentals with artistic intuition. He begins by selecting the assignment he wants to tackle, then dives into gathering references—often sourcing videos from platforms like YouTube when certain physical movements are difficult to perform or observe firsthand. These references serve as a foundation, but not a limitation.

From there, he moves into the blocking phase, carefully building key poses that define the core of the animation. While references guide him, Filip isn’t afraid to push beyond them—adding exaggeration to timing and poses when needed to better match his creative vision. Once satisfied with the foundation, he transitions into the splining phase, where the animation comes to life. Here, he refines motion, adjusts timing, improves arcs, and incorporates overlapping actions to ensure everything flows naturally.

The final stage is all about polish. Filip meticulously cleans up any inconsistencies and enhances the animation with subtle details—like secondary motion in hair or props—bringing an added layer of realism and personality. This balance of technical precision and creative flexibility is what defines his approach and elevates his work.

“iAnimate has taught me to look at animation in a different way than what I am used to. How to push my poses to be better, but not too exaggerated. And to watch out for details in body movements and facial expressions I have never known about before.”
